Guest Post | 11 Natural Cleaners That Cost Less than $10

Psst! Do you want to guest post or contribute? Read the details here or email me if you are interested at
Switching to a natural cleaning option is a great way to create a natural home and save money.  No longer do you have to worry about spending $7 on a toilet bowl cleaner that no one should be breathing in the first place.
Whether you’re new to the natural cleaning world or are looking for new natural cleaning ideas, here are 11 great natural cleaners that will not only get the job done but will cost less than $10:
#1 Baking Soda for Ovens
For less than $1, did you know baking soda can clean your oven?  Simply mix baking soda and water to create a paste.  With this paste, you will paste the bottom of your oven, let it sit there for a few hours and come back to wipe the surface clean.  The results will shock you more than likely as your oven will now look squeaky clean without using any harsh chemicals.
#2 Borax for Tackling Scum
Borax powder, which can cost less than $2 for a two-pound bag, is a salt-like crystal substance great for removing soap scum from the shower and bathtub.  Mixing two parts baking soda and one part borax, this will create a mixture that can cut through just about any scum.
#3 Vinegar for Stains
Vinegar is quite possible the king of all natural cleaner ingredients.  If you were to pick one ingredient to clean your home, it would more than likely be vinegar.  Vinegar is great for removing stains and cleaning surfaces since it reduces microbial contamination.  It’s also great for cleaning floors and windows.  Using undiluted white vinegar, fill up a spray bottle with water and dilute it with vinegar.  If you want it to smell nice, consider adding citrus peels.
#4 Vinegar for the Dishwasher
Since there are so many uses for vinegar, this is another one that works well as well.  Using vinegar, fill a dishwasher safe bowl with two cups of vinegar and set it on the top rack of your dishwasher.  Let your dishwasher run through a hot cycle with this bowl inside, and make sure no other dishes are in there.  By doing this, it will remove any odors and keep the inside of your dishwasher clean.
#5 Air Freshener
In the world of natural cleaners, there are so many awesome natural air freshener recipes.  One of my favorites would be using a lemon, rosemary and a dash of vanilla.  Inside a pan, mix a sliced lemon, two tablespoons of rosemary and a dash of vanilla.  Bring these ingredients to a simmer and wait for your home to smell like a lemon orchard.
#6 Cleaning Shower Heads
Yes – yet another use for vinegar.  If your shower head is looking a bit dirty or maybe the head is built up with hard water calcium buildup, white vinegar can break the deposits down or make your showerhead look like new again.  What you will want to do is fill a baggie with vinegar and wrap it around the showerhead with a rubber band.  Let it sit for at least 12 hours and remove it after this time limit is up.
#7 Toilet Cleaning
Cleaning a toilet is rather simple and all you’re going to need is a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar.  Similar to cleaning your oven, you will want to pour the baking soda in the toilet and let it sit for an hour.  Once this hour is up, pour the vinegar in and let it sit for another five to 10 minutes.  Unless your toilet is really dirty, it should look pretty clean once you flush it away.
#8 Vent Fan
Does your stove have a vent fan?  If so, remove it and place it in a pot of water.  Bringing the water to a slight boil, add a half cup of baking soda and watch the scum slowly disappear.
#9 Clogged Drains
If you have a clogged drain, consider using a healthy alternative approach before purchasing a harsh chemical at your local hardware store.   It’s always best to keep our water system as clean as possible.  To clear your drain, first pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of apple cider vinegar, and finally a boiling cup of water. This vinegar can be purchased for less than $5 per bottle and can also be used to fight bathtub mildew, cleaning your dishwasher and as a deodorizer.
#10 Water Ring Remover
If you have a stubborn water ring stain on anything, you may want to try this:  use one part non-gel toothpaste and one part baking soda.  Get a washcloth damp and place the toothpaste onto the washcloth.  Gently wipe the ring area and proceed to wipe it off.  Once wiped, polish with the baking soda mix, and repeat this process as necessary.   Keep in mind some stubborn stains won’t budge.
#11 Cutting Board
My last favorite cleaner trick is using a lemon while cleaning a cutting board – that’s it!  Simply cut the lemon in half and run it over the surface of the board.  Let is sit for a few minutes and rinse it away.
