Reader Asked {SIY: Hamper Tutorial}

Almost a month ago, I posted about my first SIY(Sew-It-Yourself) project with my mom, our SIY: Hamper.
Yesterday, I received an email from Cassie asking for a tutorial or tips on making one.

Here's her email to me:

"Hi I just found your blog as I was searching for a sewing pattern to replace the exact same hamper from Walmart.   You don't need to send me a step by step if you haven't already put one together. But do you have any tips or tricks that would help?  I'm going to attempt it just by copying the original bag in sturdier fabric.
Yours looks great!
Thanks very much!"

I am so thrilled about this because somebody randomly found me while searching in the www and she took her time to contact me.
And here I am so giddy inside, sharing this to y'all ♥

So this is my email to her:

Hi Cassie,

I'm so glad you found my blog and also for taking your time to contact me.  My original hamper was also from Walmart, it's not that it's no good at all but you know how it is when they say "that's what you get for the price you pay", that's what it was.  Anyway, I purchased a lot of stuff from Walmart and they STILL are one of the inexpensive places ever.

Apologies as I have not come up with a step-by-step tutorial but here are my tips on making your own hamper:

1. Choose your fabric wisely - sturdier to be specific like utility fabric or nylon/outdoor fabrics.
2. Measure your fabric to fit - use a tape measure to measure your fabric or you may also take the old fabric and use it as your pattern in making the new one.

Note: Provide an allowance on all ends of your fabric of at least 3 inches.  This will give you enough room for measurement errors.
3. Mark where to sew - use a fabric marker to mark your fabric where to sew, this will guide you & your machine.

4. Pin it - when it comes to creating the pocket where the rod is supposed to be, use a straight pin to hold it while you sew your fabric.
5. Sew in sections - when you're done with one section, stop and take out your fabric, look at it or try it on to the metal frame.  This will help you gauge if you're sewing the right way or the right side or the right size.

6. Adjust to fit - when you're finally done, try in on to the metal frame to see if it fits, if not, go ahead mark where you need to adjust.
I hope these tips will be enough for you to go for it!
